  • I didn't know that RNG page existed!  User pages dont show up in search. Could you, or I, move to its own page

      Loading editor
    • Hi, thanks for your interest. I just started writing it today, and it's not quite done yet. I'd like to at least finish up the artifact instance section before putting it in the main namespace, since that's the main reason I decided to write it. I'd prefer to put it at Random Number Generator and perhaps make RNG a redirect. If you want to go ahead and create the page, I don't really mind, just remove the artifact instance section and I'll add it when I write it, probably tomorrow.

    • OK, yeah the complete name would be indeed beter.

Anyway no rush! Was just poping by, maybe later I'll start that page then. - thanks! :)

    • OK done!  I dared to tweak a little bit: added space, tried to make the text more 'spacey' for readability.   Did changes you were probably going to do like 'Halls' -> 'Halls of Legends'.  Whatever I did, please feel 1000% free to undo.

And now we can link to RNG! Yay!  :D

  • About excavations, are those formulas the same for pre and post ascension?

  • Hi Pseudobyte, (and If other players notice this, all help is welcome)

About offline spell activity time, I was wondering if you could have a look into my saves, and maybe enlighten me? ^^'

As I said before, I had created some save files, and I can't figure it out why some spells gain more or less time. +This doesn't happen all the time. eg: All spells have gained identical spell times in the 1 day old game I'm running now (save),

Below are the 2 saves I had made, and both somehow gained different spell times.  (If opened in a game, the activity time should show longer for you + the time since I made the saves. But you should get similar times if viewed with Royal Scribe)

    Fairy http://pastebin.com/6sM0uBv1

    playtime: 9:08 (offline: 08:58)
    FC2 05:13
    DP1 02:49
    SS1 00:49
    HL1 01:42
    CtA4 09:07

    Merc http://pastebin.com/kx6Lg2P7

    playtime:21:25 (offline: 20:26)
    FC2 02:31
    GH1 04:44
    SS1 01:34
    HL1 02:47
    CtA4 17:42

PS: as usual, all spells were started around the same time, max 1-2 min apart.

Thanks, and should go without saying: tell me if you need anything.

    • The formula is based on spell length and mana cost, so the spells aren't guaranteed to get the same amount of time unless you have sufficiently high mana regen. Tiers, however, don't affect it. What you're seeing is that it happens that the cheapest tiers tend to belong to the spells that are favored by the formula, which is why you have more CtA and FC time. The amount you get on each spell is proportional to duration / cost^1.5, which is 0.0051 for CtA, 0.0024 for FC, 0.0013 for DP, 0.0007 for HL, and 0.0003 for SS on your fairy save.

You also noted in your comment that "The page says its a "generic non-specific spell" that gains activity time,", which is not the case, it says a generic spell gets casts. Specific spells get activity time.

    • I went ahead and said some of this in the comment thread as well, for anyone else looking at it.

    • I also noticed you have TC set to autocast in these saves. If you're going for activity time offline in practice, don't do that. It decreases what the other spells get but you get no benefit from it.

    • Thanks for reply! Now things seem much clearer, but not totally. My calculations don't fit... no time now, will get back to it next time.

+I had totally forgotten about disabling TC - so good you reminded me. I'll eventually have to do tier unlock runs for all those factions spells I don't use... someday.

  • So, since you've created a few templates, I wanted to ask you about whether or not you think it would be a good idea to create a template for merc builds for the merc page or whether you think it should be left as the tables.

(I've also talked some about it with Playmoarnow; http://realm-grinder.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:4705)

I do have the code nohow and the will to implement it for the builds, I'm just wondering if you think it would be a good idea?

  • Hey, if i remember correctly you were the one who added the Templates such as Formula  (if not do you know who?)

I think it would be helpful to get a few additional templates for notations. Im not sure how complicated they would be but it would be nice that via the Templates people could add a number in whatever notation they are used to and it would convert it to our standard way of displaying e.g. 12 M (1.2E7). It would save time having to go through them and update when people add in and dont do both formats.

If you are not sure how to handle this if you can point me into how to add a template i might be able to do it myself, i just dont know how to add a template.

    • Yeah, I did make those. I'm not sure how capable mediawiki is of the conversions needed for this, but I'll see what I can do. To add a template, you just need to create a page called Template:<name>. I think our best bet to do this is Parser Functions, which I believe are enabled here based on something I was experimenting with a while back. The hard part is gonna converting to and from the short scale suffixes. For starters, here's Template:Number and Template:NumberInline, which work like {{Number|12|M|1.2|7}} and {{NumberInline|12|M|1.2|7}} to produce 12 and 12.

        Loading editor
    • Those work quite nice, i see how they now work now.

Looking at that parser page i can see how the full thing would be done too.

We would need a switch statement which looks up the short notation and sets an exponent variable then with a few if statements we can adjust that exponent depending on if number is 0-10, 10-100 or 100+.

The only problem with this is that it will be a pretty damn big switch statement as we have 101 possible short notations.

Another posibility would be to string parse the notation and try to extract what its meant to be breaking it down into the 2 parts such as No Qag = 9 40 (so 49th 'illion'). that would give us a 2 part lookup with 10 posibilities in each part.

    • I looked into this some more and I found Scribunto, which allows you to script mediawiki with lua and is far more appropriate for solving this problem than parser functions. On the down side, every time I write lua, I think "I have 99 problems and they're all lua" (and say it in comments and edit summaries). On the up side, I wrote Module:NumberFormat. Right now, it exposes 5 functions, Scientific, Engineering, ShortScale, TableCell, and Inline. These can be invoked like so: {{#invoke NumberFormat | <function> | <input>}}. Scientific, Engineering, and ShortScale should mimic the game's corresponding display modes with commas enabled. TableCell works like Template:Number and Inline works like Template:NumberInline. All five functions can accept a variety of formats and should be fairly tolerant, for example: 1e7, 1E7, 1.0e7, 1.e7, 10M, 10 M, 10.0M, 10.M and 1e1 M all yield the same result. It can understand and output all the prefixes the game uses. I've switched the templates to use their corresponding functions, so now {{Number|160M}} produces 160 M (1.6E8) and {{NumberInline|160M}} produces 160 M (1.6E8).

  • Like who would spend the time to do that? http://prntscr.com/8si5gd

      Loading editor
    • Hehe, I figured I should mix it up a bit since that I just doing the same thing to 30-some pages. I wish I knew how to drive mediawiki with a bot, but since I don't, it would've taken longer to learn than to just do it.

  • Seems like you just went and stole mine (The faction icons) :P It's ight. Seems you have quite the interest in the formulas. Did you break them down yourself or get them from reddit or something? I'm curious.

      Loading editor
    • Heh, I figured I might as well make the faction articles consistent while I was messing around with them. As for the formulas, they're all from here: [1]. Druid is immediately outdated though.

    • I remember looking at that page a while back, when it was really empty. Never really looked back at it so yeah.

I'm personally waiting for the next update, just got that 200k casts trophy and working on the 100B (still too high, just a waste of time really.) FC trophy atm. Might get that done in like, idk, 3-4 days or something. I almost wish there was a -50% spell duration just to cast LS faster. Ah well.
